Judge orders Falmouth pickleball courts closed after neighbor complaints

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:21:33 GMT

A set of pickleball courts on Cape Cod are closed for the time being after neighbors complained about noise from the popular game. The group in Falmouth had a sound study conducted and hired an attorney after they said the noise in the area was unbearable. A Barnstable Superior Court Judge then ordered the courts closed. “It’s a piercing sound,” said area resident Jon Churchill of the pickleball sound. The pickleball courts in question are situated at the Lawrence School in Falmouth. Churchill lives 80 feet from the courts and can see them from his backyard. “I wear headphones, sometimes, when I’m outside,” he said. “I can’t sit on the deck. I haven’t sat on the deck in two years.”Fellow area resident Dustin Fauth said he can’t escape the sound. “Inside our house, it goes through the windows, kind of through the walls,” Fauth said. “Our bedroom actually faces it so, laying down, taking a nap, going to bed at night, it would be constant ‘Pop, pop, pop.’”...

Another Unsettled Week

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:21:33 GMT

Hopefully you enjoyed our two days of dry weather (yesterday and today) because we go right back into our unsettled pattern this week. If you’re looking for a sliver of good news with the unsettled pattern, it will be a warmer unsettled pattern than what we had last week. Last week was cold, with temperatures in the 60s and several rain chances. This week will be in the 70s with several rain chances. The most likely wet days this week look to be Wednesday and Friday. The interesting thing about our unsettled pattern is the rain hasn’t really been that heavy… at least widespread. If you got underneath a downpour or thunderstorm last week, you probably think I’m crazy for saying that. But those heavy pockets of rain have been spotty so not everyone has benefitted from that rain every single time. When you look at the *days* that recorded rain, it’s rained on 8 of our 11 days so far this month (not counting today, because it’s not over and we may actu...

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Rikki Held decided to join other young plaintiffs in a lawsuit to force Montana officials to do something about climate change after watching wildfires blacken the sky over her family’s ranch, drought stress the cattle and violent floods erode the banks of a nearby river. Held and 15 other young people finally got their day in court Monday after suing state officials three years ago for failing to take action to curb global warming. The case is the first climate change lawsuit to reach trial among dozens filed across the U.S. in the last decade. They are trying to persuade state District Judge Kathy Seeley over a two-week trial that the state’s allegiance to fossil fuel development endangers their health and livelihoods and threatens future generations. “I know that climate change is a global issue, but Montana needs to take responsibility for our part,” testified Held, now 22. “You can’t just blow it off and do nothing about it.”The state court case ...

Quebec was on the offensive in its battle against a record wildfire season as gusting winds fuelled growing blazes out West, and the federal government said it would provide free travel documents and visa extensions for people affected across the country. “This now qualifies, unfortunately, as Canada’s worst wildfire season of the 21st century,” Emergency Preparedness Minister Bill Blair said in Ottawa. There were 431 wildfires burning across Canada on Monday afternoon and more than 200 were listed as out of control.About 5,000 firefighting personnel have been deployed as the country continues to face the fierce foe. Hundreds more firefighters from Chile, Costa Rica, Spain and Portugal were expected to arrive in the coming days. The international effort has seen some success in Quebec, where thousands of people were starting to return to their homes.“To date, we have won the fight,” François Bonnarde, the province’s public security minister, said.T...
